Home Office
“a workspace shouldn’t be merely functional, it should be an inspirational place to work in. Somewhere that is stylish, interesting, but most of all fun”
Many of us are spending an increasing amount of time working from home. Whilst a lot can be achieved from the dining table it never quite feels perfect. I created this home office to alleviate that very problem. In my view a workspace shouldn’t be merely functional, it should be an inspirational place to work in. Somewhere that is stylish, interesting, but most of all fun.
This home office sits at the top of a grand staircase in a beautifully restored 17th century watermill. It needed to provide plenty of storage and a functional work area, but be a suitably eye-catching piece to top the staircase. I worked with the client and a local interior designer to come up with this design. It combines discrete touch to open cupboards on the left and a dovetail jointed Oak desk on the right. These are divided by a seemingly random scatter of open fronted display cubes.
Detail is key with any larger project like this, they show the quality and craftsmanship that go into making the whole piece. Perhaps my favourite feature of the home office is the large hand cut dovetail joint that joins the desk top to its support. Traditionally used for creating any form of wooden box structure, the joint is both strong and beautiful to look at. The drawers are joined using the same method. The design also features the extensive use of crisp mitre joints and high quality ironmongery.
