Yorkshire Rose Mantelpiece
“I stood the hefty piece of Oak up on my bench and immediately saw how a rose would be the perfect final touch”
I created this beautiful Yorkshire rose mantelpiece for a new build house in Nidderdale. The clients had recently moved into the property and wanted to put their own stamp on their new family home.
The mantelpiece is made from a huge piece of beautifully figured Oak. To compliment this natural beauty I hand adzed every face of the beam, giving a subtle honeycombed effect only visible when caught by the morning sun. Adzing is an ancient hand finishing technique; the tool is used in a similar way to an axe to hue the timber into shape.
However the aspect that makes this piece truly unique to the clients is the hand carved Yorkshire rose in the centre of the beam. This part of the design did not come to me until I selected the timber for the mantelpiece; I stood the hefty piece of Oak up on my bench and immediately saw how a rose would be the perfect final touch to the piece. Thankfully the clients agreed as the rose would complement their family heritage well.
The finished Yorkshire rose mantelpiece was fitted just in time for Christmas 2018 and will be the stunning centrepiece to the client’s living room for many years to come
