“The brief for the project was to create a piece that is both striking and functional, to fill the space available and provide a stylish way of displaying possessions”
I created the cube cascade as a hallway centrepiece; it is the first thing you see when entering the property and therefore needs to make a real impact. The brief for the project was to create a piece that is both striking and functional, to fill the space available and provide a stylish way of displaying possessions.
I wanted to create the natural look of a cascade by arranging different sized boxes in a random pattern. They fill the full hight of the room and extend out at both the floor and ceiling creating a large ’C’ shape. No two boxes are the same giving the cube cascade its irregular look. The boxes are made from solid Oak with mitred corners, the mitres allow the wood grain to flow continuously around the outside of the box with no brakes for joints.
The clients opted for a dark Oak finish on the timber as it contrasts well with the light décor of their home, immediately drawing the eye. This dark finish is produced by fuming in ammonia, a method that has been used by craftsmen for thousands of years. The ammonia reacts with the tannin in the Oak gradually causing the surface of the timber to darken. This is once again an example of how I’ve used a traditional technique to produce a contemporary design.
The Cube cascade is a truly unique piece, tailored to suit the exact needs of the client. It fits seamlessly into the space and provides a fitting home for treasured possessions. Contact me today to commission your very own unique piece of furniture.
