For this project I combined my love of furniture making with another passion, furniture restoration. The client initially approached me about the repair and restoration of her Victorian dining table, a prised family heirloom. An extremely interesting example of an early extending leaf table, it uses a screw mechanism to grow from a 4 to a 10-seater table. The table was however missing something important, matching antique style chairs.

After working with the client to establish her particular tastes I came up with a design for a new set of dining chairs.  The new chair design had to compliment the original table and bring in the hand carved details that she had requested. After approval I was able to combine the restoration process with the manufacture of the new chairs. This helped to ensure the final pieces looked as similar as possible to the original table.

As a craftsman it is a real privilege to restore an older piece of furniture, to breathe new life into it and preserve it for future generations. It was even more of a privilege to get to design my own antique style chairs to match, adding my own chapter to the story of this table.
